Our Philosophy

Dr. Spencer Puts The Person Before The Illness

At DVASH Holistic Health we practice healthcare differently. We focus on a preventative and personalized approach to medicine. Our goal is to address the root cause of an illness, not just the symptoms. We look at genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors to create a preventative approach that improves patient outcomes and empowers our patients. Our wellness programs treat the person as a whole not just the symptoms.

Meet Dr. Spencer

Dr. Honnie p. Spencer MD

Dr. Honnie Patricia Spencer was born and raised on the island of Antigua in the Eastern Caribbean. At the tender age of 5, she began formal instruction in classical piano performance and soon excelled to become one of the youngest concert pianists on the island. She won many awards and completed the Associate diploma with the Trinity College of Music London England. After completing the standard educational studies at the Christ the King High School, she attended the Antigua State College where she earned Advanced Level certifications with the University of Cambridge International Education programme in French, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. Using her pedagogical skills for teaching, she returned to her Alma Mater Christ the King High School to teach the rudiments of various subject matters including Biology, French, Geography and English.

In 1986, Dr. Spencer received a scholarship from the Moravian College in Bethlehem Pennsylvania to pursue studies in classical music. After four years, she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music/Classical Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Mathematics. Despite her passion for music, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a physician and upon graduating from Moravian College, she received a scholarship to attend Case Western Reserve Medical School/Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio. During medical school, she continued her music studies and attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and was able to complete a Master’s program in Classical Piano Performance in conjunction with the Trinity College of Music, London England. In 1994, she graduated from Medical school after spending one year as a student fellow in the department of Pathology. She was only one of two graduates of the medical school who was accepted in an Accelerated Residency program in both Internal Medicine and Family Practice. She ultimately decided to become a Family Physician since it allowed her the opportunity to interact with the family from birth until death. At the end of 3 years, she graduated from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine/University Hospitals and relocated to North Carolina where she accepted a faculty position as an attending Family Physician for a residency program.

Over the next 15 years, Dr. Spencer lectured, supervised and trained residents in the Department of Family Practice with Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program. She also served as a Medical Director of the Cabarrus Community Health Centers North Carolina and the Perdue Wellness Center Concord NC as well as an adjunct assistant professor for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Chapel Hill School of Medicine. During these years, she did not forget her musical roots and from 2000 to 2010, she created the Logan Community School of Music where she volunteered her time teaching piano to over 70 students from the age of 3 to 69 classical piano in the local community where she worked. Some of the students who graduated from her program went on to continue their studies in college. She won many awards for her services in the community including the Women of Distinction Award Lambda Upsilon Omega, The Eugene S. Mayer Community Service Award, The Piedmont Peace Project Grassroots Leader Award, and the Haupert Humanitarian Award from Moravian College.

She is a member of several professional Societies including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, the North Carolina Medical Society, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the Society of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Spencer currently works as a hospitalist for various hospitals including Harris Regional Center, and the Atrium and Novant hospital systems where she cares for patients in the Intensive care unit and medical floors. She is fluent in French, Spanish and English. She is currently a board member/Trustee for her alma mater Moravian College, board member of the Hispanic Learning Center, former board member of the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, and former board member of the Hospice of Cabarrus County.
